The purpose of this course was to aid future owners and designers of underground spaces to create well-planned, attractive and functional underground facilities that are safe, secure and cost-effective in terms of life cycle performance.

50 Participants attended the two-day seminar hosted by the Nanyang Center for Underground Space (NCUS) of the Nanyang University of Singapore.

An introduction was given by Professor Zhiye ZHAO, Professor, Nanyang Technological University

The Foundation delegated two lecturers, Messr. Ray Sterling, from Louisiana Tech University USA, and Jian Zhao from EPFL, Switzerland. Together, they gave 14 lectures during the two day of the training session.

This particular course was designed to have a half-day focus on the underground space development activities in Singapore. This “Focus on Singapore” was introduced by Dr. Yingxin ZHOU from Nanyang University. It includes a presentation on a conceptual master planning for underground space use in the Nanyang Technological University campus as well as discussion of recent underground space use projects in Singapore and ongoing national planning and feasibility study efforts.
