Claude Berenguier was one of the main founders of the International Tunnelling Association in the 1970s and was its Secretary General for over 30 years. As well as this major role, in which he oversaw the growth of the Association and its activities, in parallel he also had an impressive career as a civil servant, working for various departments of the French Ministry of Transport.  After his retirement, he remained a stalwart promoter of the underground and was one of the key actors behind the creation of the ITACET Foundation in 2009, acting as its Executive Director. Through this new role he organised over 100 training sessions in 29 different countries.
